Foundation Courses in the UK
What is a Foundation course?
If you are a foreign student completing high school and have less than 13 years of experience, you will need to take a foundation course at a UK university or college before beginning your first degree. A foundation course is a one-year preparatory programme for international students who need additional English language and academic training before enrolling in a UK university undergraduate programme.
Foundation services are designed for high school graduates who have completed a non-British curriculum but want to obtain a degree at a UK university. The foundation course is designed to fill academic gaps, improve English, and familiarise you with UK life and culture in preparation for university, and serves as a bridge between your current qualifications and UK university undergraduate entry requirements.
Foundation Course Types
Foundation courses will help you prepare for a number of subjects, including business, finance, and management, as well as computing, law, art and design, engineering, social science, medicine, science, and pharmacy, and media and humanities.
Certain foundation providers have agreements with universities and can guarantee a student’s admission if they obtain satisfactory grades. Many programmes would have students living on campus, with full university status and access to libraries, supplies, and athletic facilities.
Foundation Course Requirements
International students wishing to research a foundation must have a minimum IELTS score of 4.5, with no single factor below 4.0. If you do not have any formal English credentials, you will be required to enrol in an English language course or college before beginning your foundation course. The following documents and entry requirements are required:
- Minimum IELTS score of 4.5 or equivalent
- Higher Secondary School Certificate
- Higher Secondary transcripts
- Reference letter from your high school teacher
- Personal statement
- Scanned copy of passport and visa
